Essential Oils for pregnancy, labor, birth & postpartum

This is the moment you've been waiting for! There's no changing your mind now. Your body and this baby have come into perfect alignment with each other, and this is the day! Labor is hard work. Some might interpret that as painful, and some may describe it as intense. Either way, there is a lot going on in your body on all levels: emotionally, physically, mentally and sprititually. One of the things I love about essential oils is how they address the body on all these levels. The body is a symphony, and when one of these areas is out of balance, it can throw the whole body out of tune.

You may want to dilute essential oils used in labor with fractionated coconut oil, not beause they can't be used undiluted, but because usually they accompany a massage, and massage just feels better with a carrier oil. Some moms may be very sensitive to smells while in labor, as some scents can be very overwhelming, so remember that a little goes a long way.

I have oils avaialbe to be sampled during our prenatal visits. If you are not a client of mine, you are still welcome to purchase oils on your own!  I highly recommend consulting with somoene that is familiar with the oils as misuse may lead to adverse effects. Always sample an oil prenatally, if it doesn't smell or feel appealing to you, it's important to listen to your intuition as this may be for good reason. I don't suggest introducing any new oils or scents during labor. Please contact me if you have any questions about using essential oils prenatally, during labor, at birth, postpartum or on your baby.

Pelargonium graveolens

Geranium enhances circulation and is good for labor management technniques that focus on breath and pain relief.  The back and shoulders are often areas of tension; massage with fractionated coconut oil to these areas for relief of stress and tension.

Lavandula angustifolia

Lavender is best for delivery room atmosphere. Lavender is very calming and soothing and can bring a spirit of gentleness to the delivery room.  Grounding Blend with Wild Orange is also a great combination for the delivery room.

Ocimum basilicum

Basil can be used to relieve pain during labor and in turn gives you the strength needed to endure with greter ease.  Moms can usually cope with labor contractions until they begin to be too painful.  When they aren't able to manage the pain any longer, labor becomes difficult. Have your partner massage basil with fractionated coconut oil on your low back.

Clary Sage

Salvia sclarea

Clary sage is a uterine tonic that assists with effective contractions. It may help strengthen contractions once they have started.  It doesn't bring on contractions unless everything is already in alignment for labor.  Once labor has started, you can apply a drop topically to your pinky toes at nail bed, the inside ankle bones on both feet, and on the low abdomen every 15-20 minutes or until the strength of conctraction has increased.  I don't recommend doing this until labor has started or after 40 weeks. It can be euphoric and wonderful for relieving anxiety as well as it is oxytocin inducing.  I recommend blending clary sage with essential oils like lavender and geranium.
